Opening the Top of Your Heart

To most men, a deep, clear, and grounded presence with an open, activated heart feels unsustainable. You want to maintain an open-hearted presence, but that feels out of reach, especially in the face of life’s storms.
These are a few practices to open and purify the top of your heart. John will guide you through a heart activation, a purification exercise with deep breathwork, and an energizing expansion.
If you want to expand your capacity for open-hearted presence, start with this 8-minute practice.
Stand with your sacrum planted and navel pulled in. Then push forward with your hands in a diamond shape on an inhale and then when you exhale, make fists and pull back and open your chest from the top of your heart.
You will then hold this shape for a few breaths. Squeeze the lower portions of your scapula together, so you can feel the stretch across your chest as if your arms are getting wider. Open your throat wide and notice how that opens your heart and mind.
Then release your arms down.
Now take an "earth pose," much like a "Chi Generator" pose with your knees bent and feet wide & parallel as if on train tracks. Pull your navel in and drop your sacrum down. As you inhale on the count of 6, pull in beautiful life energy from the area around you. Activate the muscles of your core, arms & legs, and consolidate that energy into your core as you hold for a count of 6. Then exhale on a count of 6 releasing the energy out, along with any negativity, fear or doubt that you may be holding onto. This is a purification exercise.
You will repeat this cycle again 4 times, only now, each breath will be on a count of 7.
For the final practice, bring your arms up like goal posts with your palms open and hands plugging into the sky. Inhale big wide sky & starlight energy through your fingertips and the palms of your hands. Feel that sky and starlight energy filling and opening the top of your heart, your spine, the back of your brain, and the back of your heart. Make yourself really wide, as if you could touch the walls on either side of you. Think of your heart like a Tree of Life with roots coming down from the bottom of your heart and deep into the earth, and the top of your heart like a big, green, wide tree that is connected to the sky.
Then exhale and bring your arms down to your upper thighs. Drop your shoulders down and lift the top of your heart proudly. Feel the space you created in the top of your heart and how that lightened your energy in this moment. Then give your heart a deep bow.
